We’re getting closer to 5th July – the official start of Clearing – and we know you might have questions. Whether you’re rethinking your options, applying late, or just figuring things out now, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know to navigate Clearing with confidence and clarity.
What is Clearing?
Clearing is a way to apply to a university or drama school after you’ve received your exam results. It’s a second chance to find the right course for you.
When does Clearing start?
Clearing officially opens on 5 July. If you already have your results, you can begin applying right away. However, most students wait until A-level Results Day in August to take action.
Who can use Clearing?
Clearing is ideal for students who:
- Didn’t get into their first-choice university
- Missed the UCAS deadline and aren’t holding any offers
- Want to switch universities or courses
- Have decided recently they want to start higher education this September
What should international students know about Clearing?
If you’re applying from overseas, it’s best to apply as early as possible. You might need extra time to arrange things like:
- Visas
- Language proficiency tests
- Interviews

How can I prepare for Results Day?
Even if you’re confident about your results, it’s smart to have a Plan B. Take a bit of time to explore your options so you’re ready for whatever happens.
How will I know I’m in Clearing?
Your UCAS Hub will display either:
- “You’re in Clearing”, or “Clearing has started”
If you’ve missed your offers but don’t see those messages yet, it might mean your results haven’t been processed or universities are still reviewing your application.
Can I decline my current offer and apply elsewhere through Clearing?
Yes, you can! Just head to UCAS Hub and click ‘Decline My Place’. This releases you into Clearing and allows you to explore different universities or courses.
